Cox Plate

The W.S. Cox Plate is the best horse race in Australia. In fact, according to the prestigious Longines World’s Best Horse Race Awards that were recently announced in London, it is the best turf race in the world, ranked equally with the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes.

The Cox Plate is run over 2040 metres at Melbourne’s prestigious Moonee Valley Racecourse and is perfectly positioned on Australia’s Spring racing calendar. It comes a week after the Caulfield Cup makes our nation pause briefly on a Saturday afternoon and days before the Melbourne Cup causes the nation to stop altogether. The weight-for-age race is for three-year-olds and open class horses. It is part of the two-meeting Cox Plate Carnival, which begins with the Manikato Stakes Night.

The prize purse for the Cox Plate stands at just over $3 million, ranking it as Australia’s third richest horse race. It first ran in 1922 to honour William Samuel Cox, who founded Moonee Valley, and it originally offered a prize purse of 1000 pounds. The hooves of Australia’s greatest horses have touched the hallowed turf of Moonee Valley in pursuit of the Cox Plate and the names of many of those who seized it still echo through the racing industry. Among those names are Phar Lap, Dulcify, Super Impose, Octagonal, Might and Power, Sunline, Northerly, Makybe Diva and Winx. It’s no wonder the Cox Plate has come to be known as “the race where legends are made”.

Cox Plate Field and Odds

Cox Plate field

Nominations for the Cox Plate open in August and there are usually more than 200 horses nominated, with fierce competition in Australia’s horse racing industry for a shot at the acclaimed Plate and its $3 million prize purse. Ultimately only 14 starters are chosen, along with four emergencies.

In the months leading up to the race, the nominations are gradually whittled down until the big moment comes on the Tuesday before the race, when the final field is announced at around 9am. Soon after that, there is a special function in Melbourne’s CBD where the barrier draw is held.

All the eyes of Australia’s racing world, particularly the most serious punters, will be fixed upon those announcements that can make or break careers. If you want the inside scoop you will find it right here. We will analyse the results, as well as give you the best tips and show you the most relevant form guides.

Cox Plate odds

The best odds for the Cox Plate can be found in the Winter months when betting first opens, though there’s a good reason they’re so long. At that point, nobody even knows which horses are going to be running, so it’s a bit like trying to predict the weather months out from an event. There’s a list of all-in prices for possible runners, which will give you somebody to cheer for in many of the lead-up races if you place some money on one, but most punters tend to wait until the field announcement and the barrier draw before seriously trying to pick a winner.

In 2016 Winx won the Cox Plate for the second year in a row, blistering the field to take out the title by eight lengths. The mare paid $1.80.
